Nick Kyrgios set to compete at the Mallorca Championships 2022
Nick Kyrgios
The 2022 season has started off well for Nick Kyrgios. He started the season by winning the 2022 Australian Open Doubles title with childhood friend Thanasi Kokkinakis as the pair became crowd favourites for not only being local boys but also for the fantastic shots and playing style.
Having not played on the Tour since then, Nick has finally announced his participation in the ATP 250 Mallorca Championship, which would go on from the 19th of June to the 25th. Witnessed by one and all, Nick Kyrgios displayed a stable and robust game in the ATP Australian Open doubles, alongside Kokkinakis, winning the doubles titles against fellow Australian duo Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.
The ATP 250 Mallorca Championships played on the Grass courts in Spain was supposed to have debuted in 2020 but was open to playing only in 2021 due to the Covid 19 pandemic. With prize money of €951,745 for the competitors, the Mallorca Championships remains the only grass-court tournament in Spain. 2021 Mallorca Championship trophy was taken home by the current World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev.
Nick Kyrgios’s chances of winning
Kyrgios was supposed to compete in the 2021 Mallorca Championships as of the top players. However, he withdrew due to a neck injury that constrained his serve, in turn affecting his game directly. “I’m trying to get on top of it but as I can’t serve 100% I will only be returning when I feel I can make a full impact on the tour. Will stay in touch.” he had said last year.
The Australian confirmed that we would be participating both in the singles and the doubles category with Thanasi Kokkinakis. Since Kyrgios didn’t play last year, he doesn’t know his platform as well as his opponents. However, he has always been the type that goes, rocks the world around him, and then come back with an epic performance.
He said, “I am really looking forward to playing for the first time in the Mallorca Championships and on the grass courts of the Mallorca Country Club.” He further went on to add, “I have heard very good things about the club, the tournament and Mallorca in general. I want to show my best tennis and I hope to see many fans tennis there for the whole week.”
Kyrgios has always been good at surprising others in terms of his shots. Last year in the Wimbleton, he was playing very well but unfortunately, he injured his neck during the third round against Felix Auger Aliassime, forcing him to give a walkover both in singles and doubles. To back his performance, the Australian claimed in 2019, “I’m one of the best grass-courters in the world on my day so I know that I can back myself under pressure on this surface. I’ve always felt pretty comfortable on the grass.”
