Ukraine is currently under a state of emergency after Russian troops surrounded the borders. Air sirens were ringing around in the capital city of Kyiv as Russians launched missiles which resulted in several civilian-related deaths. Several tennis stars including Rafael Nadal and Elina Svitolina have expressed solidarity with Ukrainians going through the crisis.

In the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, Rublev also spoke out against attacks in Ukraine and condemned Russia’s actions calling them ‘terrible’.

“In these moments you realize that my match is not important. What’s happening is much more terrible. You realize how important is to have peace in the world and to respect each other no matter what, to be united. We should take care of our earth and of each other,” he said.

Rublev had a tough start to his 2022 season after he tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the ATP Cup as a result. Without playing any warm-up matches, the Russian’s preparations for the Australian Open were hampered and he crashed out in the third round at the Melbourne Major.

Since then the World No.7 has turned the tides around and reached the semi-finals of the ATP Rotterdam before clinching his first title in a year at the Open 13 Provence. Just hours after his win, Rublev teamed up with Denys Molchanov of Ukraine to win the title in doubles as well, completing the ‘Marseille double’ in the process. He continued his winning momentum at the ongoing Dubai Tennis Championships by reaching the finals.

The Russian No.2 will look to win a second consecutive title and will face either Denis Shapovalov/ Jiri Vesely in the summit clash in Dubai.
