The Briton had defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in five sets in the first round, and it seemed as if he could have a deep run this time around. However, Taro Daniel made light work of Murray, as he defeated him by a score-line of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Andy Murray revealed that he hopes to come back to the Australian Open in 2023, however, his performances this year will decide his fate. Murray said that results like a second round loss at a Grandslam are not motivating enough, and he is unhappy with such performances.

This is a really important year for me for a number of reasons, and I want to perform well in the big events. For me, tonight is not good enough in that respect,” said Murray.

Andy Murray was at his peak in the 2016 season, when he won the Wimbledon for a second time and defended his Olympic Singles gold medal. However, he was brought down by a horrific hip injury in 2017, which threatened his career. However, Murray fought back like a lion and returned to the professional tour.

Murray said that his future depends on how he performs in big tournaments like the Australian Open 2022. “Making the second round of slams is not something I find particularly motivating. I want to be doing better than that. [It] depends on how I get on this year results-wise and how I perform in the big events,” he said.

Andy Murray also added that he has to look back in retrospection, as he has never lost a Grandslam match against some one outside the top 100 for quite a while. Murray said his future depends on several things, which will hinge on how far he makes it in big tournaments in 2022.

It depends on many things,” said Murray of his future in the game. “But obviously a performance like tonight is not something I find motivating at this stage. I’m not sure I’ve lost a match to someone ranked outside [the Top] 100 before in a slam. I don’t know. I don’t think I have. So from that respect it’s not a great loss for me,” Murray continued.
