Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic‘s arrival in Melbourne and the drama that unfolded after it is one of the biggest controversies in tennis. The player was detained at the airport for nearly 9 hours and then taken to an immigration detention hotel where he has been since kept awaiting his trial verdict.
One of the shocking claims that have however come during the court hearing was by the player’s lawyers who are trying every trick in the book to prove his case and get him his visa so that he can play at the upcoming 2022 Australian Open that begins from the 17th of January in Melbourne Park.
As per the court documents released, Novak’s lawyers have argued that the player was granted the exemption and stated that ‘Djokovic tested positive on December 16, 2021’ the Serbian was well within the exemption criteria to be allowed entry in Australia while ‘Djokovic had not had a fever or respiratory symptoms of Covid-19 in the last 72 hours’.
Novak Djokovic’s case verdict to come on 10th January

While protests by the fans of the players led by his father Srdjan and brother Djordje continue amidst various parts of Australia and the world, the Australian government has maintained their stance that granting a visa is in the hands of the government only and despite him having medical exemptions, he is not entitled to get the visa.
The government has also informed that in no way they will restrict the player if he wishes to return back his home to Serbia and won’t be blocked or held in the case in Australia. Novak however now stands a chance to get his Australian visa cancelled for 3 years that could be a massive loss for the 9-time Australian Open champion.
Djokovic’s case against the government will have its verdict at 10:30 AM local time on Monday, 10th January. Till then he is set to remain in the detention hotel where, as per the claims of his family members, ‘the conditions of the hotel is not fit to stay,’ but irrespective of that, the player will not be transferred to another hotel and will have to wait till the trial result is out.
