After a week full of exciting tennis, the stage is set for the final showdown at the 2021 Rome Masters. And it will be old friends and foes, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal battling it out at Centrale on Sunday.

The Masters 1000 events are the most prestigious event in tennis after the Grand Slams. Currently, 9 Masters event are held across the calendar. They are- Indian Wells Masters, Cincinnati Masters, Miami Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Madrid Masters, Rome Masters, Canadian Open, Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters. Again, the trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the most successful players at the Masters.

Novak Djokovic holds the record of the most Masters 1000 Finals. Including his final in Rome, he has been a part of 53 Masters Finals and has Nadal at 52 and Federer at 50 at his tail. He has also won the most titles- 36 Masters till date and is followed by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at 35 and 28 respectively.

The Italian Open will be the final Masters 1000 event on Clay this year. The next Masters tournaments will be at Toronto and Cincinnati in August ahead of the US Open.

The Djokovic-Nadal Rivalry

The Djokovic-Nadal rivalry has been the biggest in terms of matches played and is widely considered to be one of the greatest rivalries in tennis history. Till date, they have played 56 matches against each other and their showdown in Rome will their 57th meeting.

They first met in 2006 with Nadal dominating the initial years of their rivalry but it is Djokovic who has won most matches in the recent years. He leads their H2H by the slenderest of margins, 29-27. While on Clay, Nadal has only lost 7 times out of 25. He will also have an opportunity on Sunday to draw level in terms of Masters 1000 Finals won as Djokovic currently leads 7-6.
