“Novak Djokovic lived through hell when he was young” Sergiy Stakhovsky explains why he shared only the Serb’s message
Novak Djokovic and Sergiy Stakhovsky
Novak Djokovic was one of the many athletes to reach out to former Pro Sergiy Stakhovsky who chose to join the Ukrainian army in its fight against the Russian invasion that began on 24th February 2022. With the two countries at war and vast differences between the manpower, Sergiy like many other civilians has chosen to fight for his country and defend it.
With many athletes across sports putting out messages and calling for support and help towards making contributions and any type of help towards Ukrainians, Djokovic had personally reached out to Sergiy offering him any type of help that he felt was required and asked for the best address where he could send in his contributions.
Sergiy had shared the screenshot of the conversation between the two players and put it via his social media handles. With questions arising on why he chose only to share Novak’s message, Sergiy’s reply highlighted the impact Djokovic has as a global icon.
“I put out Novak’s (message) with his permission because I know for Ukrainians, that would matter. Not all the Ukrainians would know Richard Gasquet or Lucas Pouille or Aljaz Bedene, or all the other guys, but they will see that he is supportive, that he understands that he condemns what’s going on, that’s the most important part – raise the spirit of the Ukrainians a bit.
“Although maybe they are already high with having finally a normal president who is willing to put himself where his words are and put his life on the line alongside all the other Ukrainians. It was, of course, special to hear messages from players. Novak is different because Novak lived through hell when he was young. He completely understands what our kids are going through right now in Ukraine when they live in the metro stations. So, you know, it’s something that I wish no one would have to go through,” said Sergiy as reported by Eurosport UK.
Novak Djokovic the only Big-3 member to speak on the Ukraine War
Sergiy had fired shots against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for their silence on the war and not making any public announcement condemning the actions of Russia or offering any help to the affected Ukrainians, something that Novak Djokovic had done. Andy Murray also came forward and pledged to donate all of his tournament fees and prize money for this season towards helping Ukraininans.
