20-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic is currently the biggest name in tennis. He has been the most dominant player for three consecutive years now and is well on course to be termed the ‘Greatest of All time’. But the Serbian machine is no newbie in fueling controversies time and again.
This time, Djokovic was spotted with genocide-denying politician in Bosnia. The Serb has been away from court since losing the US Open final to Daniil Medvedev. He was enjoying some time away from court at Bosnia & Herzegovina. It was during this trip, Djokovic was clicked with Milan Jolovic and Milorad Dodik at a wedding.
Jolovic is a former leader of the Serbian paramilitary unit Drina Wolves, which is believed to have played an extensive role in the persecution of Muslims in Srebrenica in the late 1900s. Political scientist Jasmin Mujanovic took to twitter to write a thread about how Djokovic was meeting a genocide-denying politician openly but he won’t lose any sponsorship deals.
“The world’s No. 1 men’s tennis player Novak Djokovic spent the last few days hanging out w/ a former underling of convicted genocidaire Ratko Mladic, & contemporary genocide denier & secessionist Milorad Dodik. Let’s see how many sponsorships “Nole” loses as a result,” Mujanovic wrote.
He added that despite his actions, Djokovic won’t be losing any sponsorship deals as such thing has also happened in past where he was seen posing with a liquor brand named after WW-2 Nazi collaborator.
“For those keeping count, 0 is also how many sponsors he lost for posing w/ a liquor brand named after WWII Nazi collaborator Draza Mihailovic. Or when he received an award from the RS entity govt, past luminaries of which incl genocidaires Milosevic, Mladic, Karadzic etc.”
