Novak Djokovic progressed into the quarterfinals of French Open 2021, as he had to grind out a five-set victory against the Italian, Lorenzo Musetti. The Serbian had to dig deep against the 19-year old, as he lost the opening two sets, and was pushed onto the backfoot. However, he made an incredible comeback, and won the next two sets, dropping just one game in all.
In the decider, Novak Djokovic was leading by a score line of 4-0, when the Italian withdrew from the match. With his victory over Musetti on Monday, he won his 31st Grandslam match in a five set encounter. He surpassed Roger Federer’s tally of 30 matches won in such situations, and tops the charts in this regard.
Nine players have managed to score atleast 24 five set victories at majors, with Novak Djokovic leading the pack with 31 victories.
Novak Djokovic adds another record to his name
Novak Djokovic’s first five set victory at a Grandslam tournament came in 2005, when he defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez at Wimbledon 2005. Since Wimbledon 2010, Djokovic has lost on just five instances, when the match goes into a deciding fifth set.
The Serbian last lost a five set match against Dominic Thiem in the semifinals of French Open 2019. Since his loss in Paris, he has won four consecutive five set matches, which includes his win over Musetti at French Open 2021.Number of Five Set Wins at Grandslams

Novak Djokovic will now face another Italian, Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of French Open. The duo have faced against each other on only one occasion in the past, with Djokovic winning in straight sets at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2019.
