After a heartbreaking defeat at the US Open finals, that shattered his dreams of being the second man in the Open Era to win a calendar grand slam, Novak Djokovic is back on the fray, adding more feathers to his cap.
Up against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in the second round of the ongoing Paris Masters 2021, the first set was an easy 6-2 win for the Serb. However, the second set was a tough loss. After the struggle in the second set, Novak came swinging to win the third, thereby winning the match 6-2 4-6 6-3.
The win has not only propelled Djokovic to the third round of the tournament, but has also garnered him a new and interesting world record.
Novak Djokovic: 418th win as world no. 1
By winning his second round clash with Fucsovics, Novak Djokovic won his 418th match as the reigning world no. 1. Also, with this win, he overtook Roger Federer, who had earlier held the spot with 417 wins as the world no. 1.
Roger Federer has spent a total of 310 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings. Out of the 310 weeks, 237 were consecutive. On February 19, 2018, at the age of 36 years and 195 days, he became the oldest player to attain the no. 1 ranking. In the span of these 310 weeks, Roger Federer achieved many incredible feats, including winning a whopping 417 matches.
Novak Djokovic ascended the no. 1 spot on the ATP rankings in July 2011. Since then, he has held the position intermittently for 10 years. In March this year, he surpassed Federer’s record of 310 weeks at the top. Currently, he is on his 345th week. He also holds the record for the most ATP ranking points (16,950). Along with American legend Pete Sampras, he has been crowned the year-end no. 1 six times.
Today, he registered his 418th match win as the world no. 1. And since it’s unlikely that he will retire any time soon, the number will continue to increase, and will not be disturbed by any active player in the near future.
