“One of the best matches that I played”- Andy Murray reminisces his Olympic triumph against Roger Federer
Roger Federer with his silver medal after losing to Andy Murray in the 2012 Olympic final
Andy Murray was one of the few players, or one might argue the only player, who had an answer to the sheer dominance of the Big 3 during his prime. He won three Grand Slams and reached the summit of the standings in the era where no player came within a touching distance of the trio. With his career derailed due to injuries and falling out of the top echelons, recency bias may play a part, but the Brit was a force to be reckoned with in his prime.
Although he reached his first Grand Slam final in 2008 at the US Open, where he lost to Roger Federer in straight sets, it wasn’t until 2012 that Murray finally triumphed at Majors. He finally put an end to his string of losses in the finals by clinching the US Open title by defeating Novak Djokovic in a 5-set thriller. That was one of Murray’s best seasons as he not only won his maiden Slam but also won an Olympic Gold medal in front of his home fans.
Andy Murray reveals the best performance of his career
Murray who is now competing at the Indian Wells remarked that his Olympic triumph ranks higher on his list compared to his win at Majors. He even claimed that it was one of the best performances of his career. In 2012, Murray lost to Federer in the finals at Wimbledon. Just weeks on from his loss, the Briton was set for a rematch with the Swiss maestro, this time for an Olympic Gold medal.
An Olympic singles gold medal always remained elusive for Federer, who had nearly won all the titles and accolades there are in tennis. But Murray dashed his hopes in a dominant fashion, as Federer offered little resistance in the title clash and lost 6-2, 6-1, 6-4. It was one of the most emphatic wins of Murray’s career, as he avenged his loss to Federer on the same center court where he lost just a month ago.
“The final of the Olympics in 2012 against Federer, for me, was probably one of the best matches that I played in terms of like the occasion and everything. I thought that would probably be the one I would pick as my sort of best performance,” he said.
His title defense was successful as he bagged a second Gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, defeating Juan Martin Del Potro in the finals. Murray then became the first player to win back-to-back titles at the Olympics.
