“One small step” Eugenie Bouchard elated on winning her first match on comeback from injury

Eugenie Bouchard has finally made her return to tennis courts after spending nearly a year on the sidelines after she had to undergo surgery to treat a torn subscapularis in her right shoulder.

The Canadian competed at an exhibition tournament, SoCal Honda Dealers Helpful Cup in California, as she begins her road to come back gradually. She recorded wins in both singles and also in mixed doubles with partner Tommy Haas. Bouchard was clearly thrilled over her progress and remarked that she was surprised by her progress.

“I played better than I expected. We had really tough conditions. We’re both very cold out here and it’s hard to serve sometimes with the wind. But I just tried to hit the shots I’ve been doing in practice since I’ve been training for my comeback,” she said

Bouchard shot to fame during her breakthrough 2014 season. The Canadian managed to reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open and the French Open, before her stellar run to the finals at Wimbledon. She broke several records in the process, she was the first Canadian player to reach the finals of a Grand Slam. She catapulted to stardom and soon became the face of Canadian tennis.

But Bouchard never managed to reach those heights again, as she struggled with the growing expectations on her and never managed to fulfill the destined career she was billed to have when she burst into the global scene. The former World No.5 is currently ranked 1459th in the world and has a long way to go to make a late-career resurgence back to the top of the game. But her progress so far on her return from injury looks promising as she tries to make a comeback to the top echelons.

The 2022 Champions Series Tennis circuit has been given a revamped format with mixed teams featuring men’s and women’s legends competing throughout the year for prize money and the season-long points championship. Bouchard headlined the opening event along with former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, Tommy Haas, and Sam Querry.

She won her first match on return by defeating Sofia Kenin 6-1 in singles before pairing with Haas to beat Kenin and Sam Querrey 6-3 in the mixed doubles match.

I had the best time playing in front of a crowd. My cheeks hurt from smiling the whole time! This mixed format champion series tennis is so fun. One small step,” she posted shortly after her win over Kenin.
