World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka survives another battle as she defeats Marketa Vondrousova 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in 1 hour and 49 minutes in front of a cheering crowd in a long duel of 1 hour and 49 minutes. Like the previous two matches, Aryna was on the ropes again after the first round but continues to fight her way back into the match and claim the win.
Marketa had 6 aces, 5 double faults, hit 24 winners, made 29 unforced errors and won 74 points in the match. Aryna from the other side of the net had 1 ace, 10 double faults, 36 winners, 36 unforced errors and won 93 points. The difference between the two came in breakpoint conversion with Marketa converting only 2 out of the 6 breakpoints while Aryna won 5 of her 8 breakpoints.
While Sabalenka had a tough time with her service game, she looked to have made some changes that were visible. Despite hitting only 1 ace and making 10 double faults, she was happy that it was an improvement in her numbers from the previous matches as she continues to rectify the mistake.
“I am really happy and I am mostly happy that I made only 10 double faults. Thank you so much for the support, the atmosphere was unbelievable here today. She (Marketa) played unbelievable tennis and I had to push really hard today and I am really happy with this win. I had some trouble with double faults but I practised and I was just continuing to keep working on my serve and get it better with every match,” said Aryna during her on-court interview.
Aryna Sabalenka to take on Kaia Kanepi in Round 4
Aryna enters the 4th round of the Grand Slam for the 2nd time having reached the stage for the first time last year. She is yet to play in the quarter-finals of the Slam and this year, Kaia Kanepi will be the obstacle Aryna would need to cross in order to reach the last-8 in Melbourne Park.
“I don’t know, I don’t wanna focus that far. I wanna focus match by match and I wanna push myself and see how far can I go. Kanepi is another big hitter and it will be an interesting match and I am looking forward to this one,” added Sabalenka on the prospect of facing Kanepi and how she plans to work her way to the finals.
