Orthopedic Surgeon briefs about Rafael Nadal’s injury, still uncertain about his level of play
Rafael Nadal
20-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal is currently eyeing his record 21st slam but he will have to wait longer for it. He has been ruled out of the remainder of the season due to a chronic foot injury and hence, won’t be competing at the 2021 US Open.
Nadal was scheduled to play 4 tournaments in the North American hard court swing- Washington, Toronto, Cincinnati and the US Open but he developed a niggle in his second match at Washington. As a result, he lost the match and was forced to withdraw from Toronto and Cincinnati. He had to travel all the way back to Spain to visit his doctor and as a result, was advised to take some months away from tennis which ended his 2021 season.
Now, renowned Orthopedic surgeon Gilbert Versier briefed about Nadal’s injury and spoke about his return on court. “For now, there are ups and downs with the treatment we have put in place at his home. Treatment which can be combined with cortisone injections, to relieve pain and inflammation,” he said.
“His soles must be redone at least two or three times a year. But everything that is surgical no longer allows the practice of sport at a high level. Delaying this intervention and the reserve for patients who are extremely painful and can no longer even walk corrective-ly. This is not the case with Nadal of course ”
Rafa and Roger to miss US Open, path clear for Djokovic to take the all-time lead
Alongwith Nadal, Federer too will miss the US Open. He has been ruled out for ‘many months’ as he is set to undergo another knee surgery. This scenario plays perfectly in the hands of Novak Djokovic, who is tied at 20 majors with Rafa and Roger. The Serbian machine will enter the tournament as an overwhelming favorite and will only be challenged by the NextGen stars.
The path looks clear of Djokovic to win the US Open and complete the calendar slam, and in turn take the overall grand slam lead for the first time in his career.
