World No. 4 and 4th seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas moves into the Round of 16 of the 2022 Australian Open after a good battle against Benoit Paire in the 3rd round on the Rod Laver Arena. Stefanos won the match 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-4 in 2 hours and 42 minutes to advance into the 2nd week of the Slam for the 3rd time in 4 years.

It is no surprise that Benoit is one of the toughest opponents out there and has excellent shot-making abilities and often makes it hell for the player on the other side of the net to win points against him given his good serve and a big arsenal of textbook shots as well as innovative shots and Stefanos admired it during his press conference giving the Frenchman the credit he deserved.

“It feels good to be playing and be a part of the last-16. I’m happy with the match today, I feel like there were certain moments when my opponent didn’t have to work as hard as I did. It was just one-shot execution from his side and he was serving really well and was coming up with good shots but I am happy I won at the end. My hard work paid off in the end with me being consistent and patient when I had to be,” said Stef discussing his match result.

In a strange turn of events, Stef received an on-court coaching violation from the chair umpire to which the player was completely surprised and reacted to it by saying, “I have no idea. I was laughing because it was funny because of the position of the court I was at and I was very far away from my coach and with my back facing the other way. So I was just laughing because I don’t know where it came from. It was completely unexpected”.

Tsitsipas will now take on American Taylor Fritz in their 4th round meeting. It will be their first meeting in Grand Slam events and first meeting in 2 years. Fritz comes into the match after a 5-set win over Roberto Bautista Agut. Taylor had bageled the Spaniard in the first set but found himself 2-sets down when the 4th set and eventually won the match 6-0, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in 3 hours and 14 minutes.

“Big server, big hitter. He has weapons, I have played him before. I really have to stay consistent and keep pushing him back. I feel like it will be really important to stay consistent with my shots and my serve and remain focused on when I will be given some opportunities in that match. It will all really be staying in the present and trying to come up with creative stuff as there will be big hitting from both sides,” said Tsitsipas on his match up with Taylor as he concluded a ‘cold’ press conference.
