Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams’ coach, admits he was “very surprised” to see Andy Murray sign up with Ivan Lendl for the third time. However, he feels the Brit is likely to reach the quarter-finals or semi-finals of another Grand Slam.

After employing Ivan Lendl as a coach for the third time, Andy Murray is expected to reach another Grand Slam semi-final. The 34-year-old won his first Grand Slam victory in 2012, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final of the US Open. He won his first Wimbledon title a year later, which he retained in 2016. All three victories were achieved under the direction of Czech icon Ivan Lendl, who himself dominated the court back in his days. Under Lendl’s coaching, British tennis legend Andy Murray won two Olympic gold medals in London 2012 and Rio 2016. However, the successful pair parted ways in 2017.

Meanwhile, Mouratoglou also believes Murray made the right decision, and that he can now return to the second week of Grand Slam competitions. “I don’t feel like Andy’s goal is to win a Grand Slam because I don’t think he can see himself doing that at the moment but to do the best he can.”

“He has always been like this throughout his career, with this mindset, to do the best he can. I think it’s great and I can completely imagine him reaching a quarters or a semis of a Grand Slam, why not? And if he does, then everything is possible,” Mouratoglou expressed whilst concluding.
