Serena Williams will finish as the ‘Greatest Ever’ even if she doesn’t break Margaret Court’s record: Patrick Mouratoglou
Margaret Court and Serena Williams
Serena Williams is often regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. The American has ruled the court for so many years and is still going strong. Games after games, Serena has dominated everyone who came in her way. However, she hasn’t been able to perform as per expectations in the last few months.
The epitome of strength and determination, Serena has been plagued by injuries in recent times which has prevented the 23 times Grand Slam champion from winning her 24th title. However, no one can deny that Serena is a pioneer of tennis “intimidation” who will make a thumping comeback pretty soon.
‘Margaret Court was playing at a time when tennis was an amateur sport’: Mouratoglou
Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena’s coach has recently claimed that Williams, who is just one title away from equalizing Margaret Court’s all-time Grand Slam title wins record will still finish as the greatest of all time even if she is left stranded on 23 title wins.
“I don’t mean to disrespect Margaret Court, but it’s another era. Yes, it would be better if Serena broke her record but, if she doesn’t, she will still be the greatest player of all time,” Mouratoglou claimed. He went on to add that Margaret played at a time when most of the players didn’t even participate in the Australian Open.
“Margaret Court was playing at a time when three-quarters didn’t even go to Australia for the Australian Open, where tennis was an amateur sport, when the draws were 16 players,” he said. Serena last made her way into a championship final during 2019 Wimbledon where she was defeated by Simona Halep. Since then, the American hasn’t been able to bring out her best on the court.
