“Paula Badosa is a fighter,” Lindsay Davenport believes the Spaniard can win a major
Lindsay Davenport and Paula Badosa
Former World No. 1 and three-time grand slam champion Lindsay Davenport recently commented on her thoughts regarding the players this season who have had a tremendous improvement in comparison to 2021. The player that the American chose was World No. 7 Paula Badosa. The 24-year old Spanish player has attracted quite the attention since her maiden title last year in the Indian Wells Masters 1000. This also pushed her up in the WTA Rankings to the top 7.
This year, Badosa won her third career ATP title in the Sydney International tournament after beating World No. 2 Barbora Krejčíková ( 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 ). She is also one of the potential candidates to win the 2022 BNP Paribas Open.
“She was the most improved player last year”: Davenport on Paula Badosa
The 45-year old veteran tennis player started by saying, “There’s a lot of players that improved a lot but, arguably, she was the most improved player last year. She was a great junior player. She’s talked about how tough that was for the first few years on the pro tour.”
Ever since she turned pro in 2015, the Spaniard has continuously dedicated herself to constantly improving her game and playstyle. “But you see a player kind of come into their own, and you could see her as the year went on, you could just see how she behaved on the court, like, ‘Yeah, I belong here,” said Davenport regarding Badosa‘s mindset and demeanor on the court.
Lindsay Davenport’s admiration for Paula Badosa
The former World No. 1 ended by saying, “It’s really fascinating and fun to watch when you’re on the sidelines and you see a player really live up to their potential, and a lot of times it starts between the ears.”
“These players are so good, but once they believe they can be there and once they believe in their game at those big moments, you get a result as you saw with Badosa at Indian Wells. I believe she’s going to win a major. I love her game. I love her work ethic. I love her behavior on court. She’s a fighter out there.”
