Players missing at French Open 2021
French Open 2021 is just around the corner, as it is set to commence from May 30. Top players all over the world, will make their trip to Paris to reign supreme on the red clay. Missing a Grandslam tournament is the worst case scenario for a tennis player, however, given the packed schedule throughout the year, it becomes vital to make a careful decision.
Like most of the majors, this year’s French Open will see a few players missing from the tournament. Some of them have already won a title in Paris, and will be certainly missed by their fans. Given that the full-fledged grass court season begins just after the clay court season, it is absolutely vital for players to recover well from their injuries.
Andy Murray
Andy Murray is one of the most reputed players to miss out at French Open 2021. The three time Grandslam champion finished as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic at French Open 2016. He has decided to focus on the grass court season that follows in June-July, and give his body adequate amount of rest. Considering his hip injuries and struggles, it was a good decision by Murray to skip the tournament in Paris.
Stan Wawrinka
Stan Wawrinka pulled out of the French Open 2021, after failing to recover from an injury. The Swiss won the French Open title in 2015, after defeating Novak Djokovic in the finals. Last year, he was defeated by local favorite, Hugo Gaston in the third round in a five set thriller. With his withdrawal, he ends his streak of 16 consecutive appearances at French Open.
Simona Halep
Simona Halep, world number one and 2018 French Open champion will miss the event this year after a tear in her left calf needed some more healing. The Romanian withdrew from the second round of the Italian Open 2021, after struggling with her injury. “It’s with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from @rolandgarros this year. Unfortunately the tear in my left calf needs more time to recover and the timeline is just too short. Withdrawing from a Grand Slam goes against all my instincts and aspirations as an athlete, but…..” she tweeted.
The Wimbledon 2019 champion will aim to defend her title this year, and would hope to make a full recovery before the grass court season commences.
Denis Shapovalov
Denis Shapovalov shoulder issues forced him to withdraw from the French Open 2021. The Canadian competed in the finals of Geneva Open, where he was defeated by Casper Ruud in straight sets. Shapovalov was looking in good form ahead of the French Open, and he would be gutted to miss out this year.
“I’m saddened to share that after consulting with my medical team I’ve made the difficult decision to withdrawal (sic) from @rolandgarros,” he tweeted. Unfortunately my shoulder has been bothering me and while medical tests look good, it is for the best to rest. See you in 2022, Roland-Garros,” Shapovalov added.
Nick Kyrgios
French Open will miss one of the most entertaining players on tour for the second successive year. Nick Kyrgios has decided to skip the clay court season, as he prefers faster surfaces. He is all set to make his comeback on grass courts in June, and has already begun his preparations for the same.
