The extension of the master’s 1000 event from a seven-day format to an 11-day format has become a major topic of discussion in recent weeks.
Many players are yet to adapt to the format as they are forced to change their habits. American ace Taylor Fritz is the latest to slam the ATP for the change of format.
Fritz has participated in three consecutive Masters since April. He suffered an early exit in Monte Carlo but regrouped at the Munich Open, finishing as a runner-up. He reached the semifinals of the Madrid Open and, in less than two weeks, reached the quarterfinals of the Italian Open.
However, the length of these matches has become a burden for the American, who will still compete at the Roland Garros on May 26.
The likes of Alexander Zverev, Elena Rybakina, and Caroline Garcia have lamented the stretch of the Masters format. They have all complained that it doesn’t give them any space for fun outside of tennis. Recently, some players are beginning to skip tournaments due to illness and other worries.
Besides that, the ATP has already released the 2025 calendar events, increasing some tournament days. This has led Fritz to add his voice to several complaints about the increase in the Masters 1000 event format.
Going out and having fun doesn't exist for us, whereas in other sports all this is possible because there are rest periods. Athletes from other disciplines can go on vacation. I feel like it's just because we play too much and get injured a lot that we don't have a life off the field. At this age, it would be nice to have other interests. We play way too much. The season should be much shorter. From 18 to 30 years old, our life revolves around tennis.Taylor Fritz said via SkySport
Meanwhile, Fritz is going to compete at the Geneva Open next week, just days after exiting the quarterfinals of the Italian Open. The American is working hard to find his perfect form before Roland Garros.
Taylor Fritz among the favorites to claim the Geneva Open title following good clay form
Taylor Fritz is among the top seeds for the Geneva Open and would likely face last-minute wildcard earner Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. The American won the Delray Beach Open title in February but has yet to win another title.
He was hoping to win the Munich Open but lost to Jan-Lennard Struff in the final. He has stepped up his game since the clay season and is a serious candidate for winning the Geneva title ahead of the French Open.
However, the 26-year-old will have to pass through a series of difficult opponents to win the Geneva title. The likes of Jack Draper, Ben Shelton, and Andy Murray are all competing for the title.
