Amanda Anisimova
World No. 43 Amanda Anisimova was involved in a thrilling encounter with Leylah Fernandez in the second round of the ongoing 2022 Indian Wells Open but the match ended in a sudden manner leaving everyone involved in shock for the manner in which the events folded. Amanda left the court at the end of the second set when the score was 2-6, 7-6(0) with Leylah just having won the second set.
Amanda had multiple match points during the second set but failed to convert them and it proved enough for Leylah who did not concede a single point in the tiebreaker to level the terms and force the decider set which was not played as Amanda after speaking with the umpire left the court immediately despite the chair umpire requesting her to stay for a while amidst the chaos and confusion.
“Can you wait for supervisor because it’s all of a sudden let’s wait. Amanda please wait for the supervisor, thank you. Amanda wants to retire, she says she’s really sick pls come to court asap,” the chair umpire announced after Amanda walked off the court saying she was ill. Despite multiple requests, the American did not stop to which the chair umpire announced, “OK, Leylah it’s finished.”
With everyone confused about what actually happened, Amanda took to her Twitter handle to explain what actually happened on the court during her match with Fernandez. She however deleted the tweet a while later for reasons unknown.
“Unfortunately, I’ve been quite sick the last few days and yesterday I woke up feeling very ill. I wanted to try and push through it in the match and continue playing the tournament. I couldn’t go on with the match anymore because I felt like I was putting my health at risk at that point. It’s disappointing for me to end this week like this, but that’s just the way it is sometimes. I’ll try to be better next time. I’ll look forward to getting back on court soon. And please keep your negative comments to yourself,” wrote Amanda.
A poor week for Amanda Anisimova

Amanda’s stay in Indian Wells has not gone well as she was left without a coach in between the tournament. Having paired up with Darren Cahill, the coach returned back home as he found it difficult to cope with the quarantine rules and wished to spend time with his family, announcing a shocking split while the tournament was going on. With an illness forcing her out of the tournament, the American youngster will look to have some good days ahead.
