Former World No. 3 and currently ranked 237th in the world, Stan Wawrinka is set to return to action during the Golden Swing of the 2022 season. The 3-time Grand Slam champion has not played a match for almost a year due to his surgery on the left foot that has kept him out from March 2021.

The 2015 French Open champion has already announced his plans to play at the 2022 French Open and is looking to get enough practice on the surface as well before he returns to Grand Slam action for the first time since his 2nd round exit from the 2021 Australian Open when he lost in 5-sets to Marton Fucsovics.

The Swiss revealed that he and Murray pushed their bodies to such an extent to challenge the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer that their body eventually crashed.

“ We are all getting old! We all played for fifteen to twenty years. We all played more than we imagined when we started. Injuries happen more easily. Del Potro, I put him aside, because he was hit quickly and for a long time. Andy and I had to push our bodies so hard that after a while, things let go,” said Wawrinka.

Wawrinka is expected to stage a comeback this clay season and is also expected to compete at the 2022 French Open.

However, he concluded that despite injuries being the worst for athletes, he still believes that he can play for a couple more years at least. He stated that he is positive about his current situation ahead of his return to action.

“Injuries are the worst for an athlete, but I still have this belief that I can play for one or two years. I am super positive about my situation,” added the Swiss.
