“Really sad to see”- Former British No.1 Johanna Konta shares her views about the Novak Djokovic controversy

Novak Djokovic
Despite the onset of the Australian Open 2022, Novak Djokovic and the controversial situation surrounding him is still dominating the headlines. The Serbian was involved in a huge controversy regarding his vaccination status as per Australian government guidelines. Despite that, the Serbian was given an exemption to participate in the competition. However, after Djokovic arrived in the country, the Aussie government revoked his visa and ordered him to be deported back, leading to cries of politics, mismanagement and mistreatment by the government.
After a couple of appeals by World No.1 and a lot of speculation among the outside world, the drama finally ended as the final decision was to get the Serbian deported back. The tennis world and fans, in general, have been divided on this matter, with one half criticizing Djokovic for not getting vaccinated, while the other half criticizing the government for allegedly treating the Serb like a ‘prisoner.’
Konta sympathizes with Novak Djokovic post controversy

Many players and ex-players have given their views on the Novak Djokovic controversy. One such player was former British No.1 Johanna Konta, who was sympathetic about Djokovic. Konta said that she felt genuinely sad to see such misbehavior and mismanagement happening to Djokovic as he’s a good man and always tries to do good for the people, being generous with his money. The recently retired Briton believes that Djokovic always takes out time to help out people, and is thus very sad to see the situation pan out the way it did.
“There are a lot of different elements to it. But I think overall it’s just a sad situation. It’s so sad to see someone who tries really hard to do right by people, right by fans, right by tournaments. He’s quite generous with his money and time to help. I think it’s unfortunate to see someone in that situation and hurting like that,” said Konta on the situation.
She also added that she, along with the rest of the tennis world, were looking forward to see the World No.1 defend his Australian Open crown, and that he would be missed at the tournament. Djokovic would miss the tournament and probably be deported from the country following his failed appeal against his visa being revoked.
“Also, we would have loved to see Djokovic there playing for his 21st Grand Slam. It’s history and we want to be a part of that history.”– Konta added.
