When it comes to breaking records, there is no other player better than Rafael Nadal. It was once again evident when the Spaniard became the first man in tennis history to reach the finals of at least 20 Masters 1000 tournaments on two different surfaces (20 on hard court and 33 on clay).

The achievement came after the 21-time grand slam champion defeated Carlos Alcaraz, an 18-year-old Spaniard, in a three-set thrilling contest in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells 2022 tournament. In the process, the Spaniard extended his 20-match winning streak whilst also reaching his 20th ATP Masters 1000 hardcourt final.

Only two other members of the BIG 3 have advanced further than the Spaniard in terms of reaching the ATP Masters 1000 final. But again, this should come as no surprise as most of you, we are sure, saw it coming. With 33 trips to the summit showdown on clay, the 35-year-old has the most finals in history. Djokovic has reached the second-most Masters 1000 finals on clay, with 18 appearances to date. With a total of 16 finals, Federer is in the third position.

Rafael Nadal will face Taylor Fritz in the 53rd Masters final on Sunday in his quest for a fourth Indian Wells title. At the moment, the 35-year-old has 36 ATP 1000 titles, one less than Novak Djokovic’s all-time record of 37 Masters victories. However, if Nadal wins the Indian Wells Open, he will move into exclusive possession of second place on the list of players with the most titles in the tournament. He’ll be one behind Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who all have five.

Also, he is presently tied for third place with Michael Chang and Jimmy Connors, both of whom have won three titles.
