Daniil Medvedev

Current World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev, is one of the heavy favourites to win the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. Having come so close to winning two titles this year, the Russian will not let another great opportunity slip by his fingers looking to record his first title in the Tennis Paradise.

Medvedev has never won an Indian Wells Masters title before. At the 2021 Indian Wells, Medvedev reached the 4th round before being defeated by Grigor Dimitrov stopping the Russian from reaching the quarter-finals of the Masters event once again.

As the first seed in the Indian Wells Masters 1000, Daniil Medvedev will skip past the first round getting a ‘Bye’ and directly moving on to the second round. Here he will probably square off against World No. 81 Alexei Popyrin, who he has previously played against three times, 2019 Wimbleton, 2020 AO, and 2021 Miami Open. Medvedev leads the head-to-head with 3-0.

If The Russian can make it past the second round, he might lock heads with French tennis star Gael Monfils in the third round. The two players have encountered each other twice. Once in the Sofia Open 2019 and in the ATP Rotterdam 2019. Their Head-to-head stands at 1-1, making their matchup very interesting.

In case Medvedev makes it past the first three rounds, he will probably go up against any one of two Spaniards, Carlos Alcaraz Garfia or Roberto Bautista Agut. The 18-year-old player has displayed tremendous strength this year, making him a potential threat to every opponent.

If the Russian reaches the quarterfinals of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, he would probably face off against the World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. Both players go back quite long, having played against each other on multiple occasions since 2018. Tsitsipas is one of the contenders expected to win the Paribas title this season.

Rafael Nadal would be Daniil Medvedev’s Semifinals opponent if he can win over his quarterfinals match. This year itself, the two players have played against each other twice, with the Spaniard taking a lead of 2-0. But Medvedev will try to get back at Nadal for his previous loss. This match won’t be easy for either of the parties.

Lastly, the deciding match for the title. If The Russian reaches the finals, he can expect German tennis star Alexander Zverev. The German has been deeply criticised for his conduct on the court. But none of it changes the fact that he is a very strong and formidable opponent and can certainly make Medvedev work hard for the title.
