Revealed! Novak Djokovic’s path to claim his 3rd Monte-Carlo Masters Title

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is all set to return to the tour at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, which will be the curtain-raiser for his clay-court season. The Serb had a hard time entering tournaments owing to his vaccination status, but he will face no such qualms in Monte Carlo. He is all set to play his second tournament of the year after the Dubai Tennis Championships in late February.

Despite his inactivity, Djokovic has reclaimed his World No.1 ranking after losing it to Daniil Medvedev. He holds a slender lead of 10 points over the Russian and he can extend it further given Medvedev is likely to miss the majority of the clay-court season. Djokovic is a 2-time winner at the Monte Carlo Masters and will be one of the favorites this year, and add a third to his tally. The Serb might be rusty but he enters the draw with a rather depleted field following the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal, Medvedev, and Matteo Berrettini.

Tough road ahead for Novak Djokovic

Djokovic is yet to make it past the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo since his last title triumph in 2015, and he has a tricky road to the finals this time around as well. Being the top seed he will receive a bye in the first round and will begin his campaign against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Marcos Giron in the second round.

The World No.1 is then likely to face either Dan Evans or Roberto Bautista Agut in the next round. This might be a challenge for the Serb as the last time he faced Evans was coincidentally last year at the same stage in Monte-Carlo, where he was knocked out in straight sets by the Brit. Djokovic has a 9-3 record against Bautista Agut, but the Spaniard has come out on in 3 of their last 4 meetings on hard courts.

Then an enthralling quarter-final against newly crowned Miami Open Champion, Carlos Alcaraz or Indian Wells champion, Taylor Fritz awaits the top seed. This will be the first time Djokovic and Alcaraz square off against each other. In the semi-finals, he will likely clash against an in-form Casper Ruud or Cameron Norrie. If he crosses these hurdles, in the title clash he might be up against either reigning Olympic champion, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev or defending champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas.
