REVEALED: ‘Open for conversation’ Andy Roddick declares interest to REPLACE John McEnroe as captain of Team World at the Laver Cup
Roger Federer and Andy Roddick
Andy Roddick is one of the most unfortunate players in the world of tennis. The American was the top-ranked in the world for a short amount of time after his 2003 US Open triumph. However, with the amount of talent he had, he could have won many more Grand Slams if the circumstances had been right.
The American was unfortunate enough to have peaked in an era when a young Roger Federer was slowly realizing his potential and starting to show the signs of the legend he was to become in the future. Roddick reached four more Grand Slam finals in his career but was defeated by Federer on each occasion.
Roddick open to be part of the Laver Cup
The Laver Cup has gone on to become one of the most popular and awaited tennis exhibition tournaments in the world, with stars from across the globe being a part of it. Despite its short existence, the tournament has gone on to enjoy amazing popularity. Last year’s tournament, held in Boston, was attended by greats such as Andy Roddick and Roger Federer.
Last year, Federer could not be a part of the team Europe due to his knee surgery but did travel to the tournament to support his team from the stands. Roddick, on the other hand, visited the event and also conversed with the Swiss Maestro. When asked recently on Twitter about whether he would like to be the captain of Team World, the American replied positively and said that he would be interested in the given role.
After this response, another person asked whether the Former World No.1 would be interested in taking up the role from this year’s edition in London. Roddick replied by saying that it is not his call and that he would have to prepare more to know exactly about what goes into the role but did reiterate his interest in the position.
“Not my call, and admittedly I don’t know all that goes into it, so would have to learn a bit more……I think it’s a great event and would be open to a conversation for sure,” tweeted Roddick.
The current captain of Team World is the legendary John McEnroe, who is sharing the co-captaincy with his brother Patrick. This year’s edition of the tournament would have some big names, with the biggest of them being Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
