David Goffin won the showdown in Morocco for the Grand Prix Hassan ll title against Alex Molcan. He defeated Molcan 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win his 6th singles title. Before their final match in Marrakech, Molcan had a 1-0 score against Goffin. He had beat Goffin in straight sets in Melbourne this year.

In this tournament, Alex Molcan was on fire as he pulled off an incredible upset, defeating the Canadian Star and number one seed of the tournament Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16. He also beat the eighth seed Laslo Djere in the semifinals. With the first set win against Goffin, it looked like Molcan would win his first single title against all odds.

But it was not meant to be as Goffin came back immediately in the 2nd set. Goffin also saved a breakpoint at 4-3 in the final set after Molcan hit the backhand into the net. With momentum on his side, Goffin won the third set to win the tournament. He also avenged his loss at the hands of Molcan in Melbourne. Though Goffin’s win was a lot sweeter, it also gave him the title in Marrakech.

“I’m very happy, proud of my week. It was not easy, a lot of tough matches. But at the end, I have my sixth title, here in Marrakech. It gives me a lot of happiness and confidence for the season on the clay. It was the case twice before that match that I lost the first set and I always stayed calm the whole week to turn it around. It was the case again today because he was playing well. He was better than me in the first set, and then I managed to play better and better, serving better, being more aggressive in the middle of the second.

“I was the better player [after that]. I was playing even better in the third set, so I’m really happy the way I finished with another break [and] a good match point. I didn’t want to serve for the match, I preferred to finish with a break,” said Goffin on clinching the title.

“I’m really grateful for it. You helped me to win many matches this week, so thanks again. Hopefully, I will come here next year, and you will cheer for me as well,” Molcan said as he accepted the runners-up trophy and will rise 15 places to enter the Top-50 while Goffin rises 27 places to World No. 47 after the title.

Goffin will look to build up on his fantastic win in Marrakech to play some good tennis in the Monte Carlo Masters where he will face Jiri Lehecka on 12th April.
