Former World No. 1 and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer continues to recover from his 3rd knee surgery that he underwent in August last year. The surgery also ended his very short 2021 season and has kept him out so far this season with another two months to be missed by him as per his initial recovery plan.

While Federer has been on the sidelines, close rival Novak Djokovic chased his record down and equalled him at 20 majors winning 3 slam titles last year and almost winning the 4th what would have been the historic 21st major but Daniil Medvedev got the better of Djokovic in the 2021 US Open finals.

On the other hand, Nadal who had matched Federer’s tally by winning the 2020 French Open, went a step ahead of both Federer and Novak to win the 2022 Australian Open and become the first and only man on the planet to have 21 majors in the singles discipline and taking a lead in the race for the most number of Slams for the first time in his 2-decade long illustrious career.

As Nadal now takes the lead, the debate over who will end up as the Greatest of all Time (GOAT) in tennis has got yet another dimension to look into. With Federer set to miss the 2022 French Open as well and Novak is also doubtful given his decision to remain unvaccinated, Nadal now stands the chance to win his 22nd major and 14th French Open title and extend his lead in the majors column.

“If Nadal wins 22 I think he’s got the crown. Nah, he’s (Federer), I mean to quote this, Roger’s done for me in the GOAT talks boys, he’s done. I thought about it, he’s got a losing record against both of them, like really bad records. I don’t even think Roger beats some of the other guys on grass now,” said Nick Kyrgios during the recent episode of his ‘No Boundaries Podcast’.

The statements from Kyrgios were quite shocking as he has always preferred Roger over the other two Big-3 members in the discussions about who is the GOAT. However, with Federer about to celebrate his 41st birthday this year, the 2022 Australian Open Doubles champion believes his idol can no more win any majors and defend his case in the GOAT debate.

As for Novak and Rafa, they are 34 and 35 respectively and have the example of Roger in front of them for showing how to extend their career and keep winning big titles as well.
