French Open 2021: Roger and Serena tied at 363 wins each at the Grand Slams

Roger Federer and Serena Williams

Roger Federer is back to winning again, and winning in style too. The thirty nine year old from Switzerland won his 363rd match in a Grand slam when he beat thirty four year old Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan, 6-2 6-4 6-3. Later, Serena Williams won her first round match, and in the process equaled Roger Federer in total number of wins in majors.

The thirty nine year old American beat Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets, 7-6 6-2. It’s incredible how these two athletes who started their careers almost parallelly have gone on to become the doyens of men’s and women’s tennis respectively. Ironically though both have not been able to dominate the French Open. Let’s take a closer look.

Federer made his French Open debut in 1999. In the last twenty odd years he has been to the Final five times, and won it once, in 2009. He won the French Open in 2009 beating Robin Söderling in the final 6–1 7–6  6–4. Overall, Federer is 70-17 at the French Open, a winning percentage of 80%. This percentage is his lowest among all majors. The second lowest is the 86% win percentage he has at the US Open.

Serena Williams made her debut in the French Open in 1998. In the years gone by she has made it to four Finals and won three of them. She won the title in 2002, 2013 and 2015. In 2002 she beat Venus Williams, in 2013 she got the better of Maria Sharapova and in 2015 she defeated Lucie Safarova. Serena is 66-13 at French Opens, a winning percentage of 84%.

What does the future hold for Roger Federer ?

Roger Federer had already publicly stated that he was not playing to win the French Open. Now that he has won the first match of the Open, and that too with so much conviction, maybe his stance has changed.

But this year for Roger Federer is about the Wimbledon and then the Olympic Games. Roger Federer would like nothing more than to win a ninth Wimbledon crown and a Olympic Gold medal for Switzerland before hanging up his racquet.
