New York Times Journalist and Author Christopher Clarey weighs in on Roger Federer and his future. He points out the challenges that are in the way of Federer and another Wimbledon title. Clarey points out the reason why Roger has still not put down his racquet. Federer might still be looking for one more Grand Slam title before finally getting some rest. Admittedly, that is being hugely ambitious and optimistic. But, It would not be surprising if that’s the case, because it takes lofty ambitions to be of Roger’s stature.

The greats have become so due to their relentless hard work, uncompromising attitude, and indomitable will. Such is the story of “the big three” in tennis. They have held back the wave of talented youngsters and have consistently increased their levels to win an astonishing number of Grand Slams.

Roger Federer, the oldest of the three, was the one to usher in their era where there could be no compromise on the level of play. You had to be consistent, ruthless, and precise. The Big three pushed each other to play their best tennis and they are still not done.

Roger Federer’s Recent Struggles

It has been some time since Federer entered a semifinal. His last tournament was the Wimbledon, where Hubert Hurkacz ousted him in straight sets (6-3, 7-6, 6-0). He struggled with a bad knee, and he still managed to get to the quarterfinals.

Roger has not announced his retirement yet, which according to Christophe Clarey, means that he still thinks he has at least one Wimbledon win left in him. Champions are rarely sure about their time to step down, and Federer is no different. But, Clarey feels that even with his complete recovery, Federer might still not be able to win a Grand Slam.

The last time Roger Federer was in full health, he was only one point away from winning Wimbledon, only one point. In my opinion, he thinks he still has a chance, if he recovers physically, to win Wimbledon. He didn’t do too badly at Wimbledon in 2021 where he reached the quarter-finals at 39 despite knee pain. Nevertheless, I doubt he can do better than that because there are too many opponents in his way for his dream to come true“, said Clarey as reported by welovetennis.

Federer, currently aged 40, could have some stamina and endurance-related issues. He is not comfortable having long rallies, considering its toll on his performance. On top of those issues, a new set of young talents is coming in hot. They are much more fierce, confident, and hungry than Federer would be at the current stage.

But hey! We would surely like to see Roger Federer go out with a bang. It would be a fitting end to his historic career, a career that inspired numerous players to excel and many million fans worldwide.
