Zverev came into this tournament on the back of a massive triumph at the Madrid Open. At Madrid he beat the best of the lot including Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini.

With Nadal not being at his imperious best, the cay courts this year have witnessed a real variety of winners. This is not to take away from Zverev who has deserved the title win. After a first round bye, Zverev was up against Hugo Dellien from Bolivia in the second. Zverev won the contest in straight sets, 6-2 6-2. His third round opponent is the Japanese veteran Kei Nishikori.

Nishikori started this year’s clay court sojourn in Barcelona, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in the round of sixteen to Rafael Nadal. At Madrid, he was ousted in the round of thirty two by Zverev. At Rome though, he has looked good. His first round victory over Fabio Fognini was comprehensive, a straight set win 6-3 6-4. In the second round he got a lucky break when his opponent, Pablo Carreño Busta, gave a walk over.
