Dominic Thiem has not made a start he would have liked to. The World No. 4 from Austria is yet to reach a final this year. He had taken a break to recover from his knee injury and from the constant life in the bio-bubble which the players have to stay in during the tournaments.
He comes to Rome from his best tournament performance of the season, reaching the semi-finals at the Madrid Masters 2021 where he lost to one of his arch rival and eventual champion, Alexander Zverev who recorded his first victory over Thiem after 4 consecutive defeats against the Austrian. He comes from a first round bye and a 3-setter win in the 2nd round.
Lorenzo Sonego has been struggling to find consistency and has been making early exits at the tournament. He has still won a title this year, winning the Cagliari Open 2021 in his homeland in Italy. His 2nd best performance came at the Montpellier 2021 where he made it till the quarter-finals but apart from this he has failed to qualify ahead of the Round of 16.
He comes to Rome from the Monte Carlo Masters 2021 where he faced defeat in the Round of 32 to Zverev. At the Rome Masters, Sonego won his first round in 3-sets and followed it up with a straight round victory in the 2nd round.
