Rublev comes into this contest after a defeat to French veteran Adrian Mannarino in three sets at the 2021 Kremlin Cup. Being the top-seed, he received a bye in the first round. It has been an up and down time for the Russian on the hard courts, since the start of the Tokyo Games.

A finalist show in Cincinnati, followed up with an early exit at the 2021 US Open, the 24-year-old is yet to win matches consistently. However, he will be delighted on having qualified for the 2021 World Tour Finals in Turin next month. Furthermore, Rublev is also billed as the top favourite to win the title this week in St. Petersburg.

On the other hand, Ivashka comes into this round after beating Laslo Djere in the last round. Although the Belarusian couldn’t progress past the opening round in Sofia last month, he did make the semifinals of Nur-Sultan after winning the title in Winston Salem, in the run-up to the 2021 US Open. Interestingly, the 27-year-old has lost only six matches on the hard courts this season and compared to 14 wins.

Although Rublev is the overwhelming favourite to win this match, he shouldn’t be underestimating the capabilities of Ivashka, especially given the Belarusian’s run on the hard courts lately. That said, if the Russian can find his range of strokes in the early minutes of the match, then it would be a daunting task for Ivashka to stage an upset.

Match Prediction: Andrey Rublev to win in straight sets.
