The 2021 season has been a dream for Casper Ruud. The Norwegian has won 5 titles this season- the most by any player on the ATP tour. After bowing out of the first round at Wimbledon, he won three consecutive titles- the Swedish Open, the Swiss Open and the Austrian Open. He then reached the quarterfinals at both Toronto and Cincinnati Masters. After a poor outing at Flushing Meadows, he won the San Diego Open beating Cameron Norrie in the final.
He defeated Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round of the Indian Wells after receiving an opening round bye.
As for Lloyd Harris, he has had a fairly decent season so far. After reaching the third round of the Australian Open, he made it to the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships where he also beat top seed Dominic Thiem in the second round. He then had a poor clay court swing and then reached the quarterfinals at Halle. In the North American swing, he reached the quarterfinals of the Washington Open and made it to the quarterfinal of US Open where he lost to Alexander Zverev.
In the second round at Indian Wells, Harris got the better of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets 6-3,6-3 to book a date with Ruud.
