Sania Mirza and Shuai Zhang
Multiple grand slam champion Sania Mirza won her first title of the season with Chinese partner Shuai Zhang at the 2021 Ostrava Open. The Indo-Chinese duo got the better of Kaitlyn Christian and Erin Routliffe in the women’s doubles final in straight sets 6-3,6-2 to lift the Ostrava title.
The Indian decided to pair up with Zhang post the US Open and they played the Luxembourg Open as the second seed where they bowed out of the quarterfinal. They backed up their performance with a title victory at Ostrava where they dropped just two sets.
With this win, Mirza now has 43 tour titles to her name and has moved upto No.62 in the WTA Rankings. According to her father, she is very nearly playing at her best and will soon start going deep in the majors. This was Sania’s second final of the season, following a runner-up finish at the Cleveland Championships with Chirstina McHale.
The Indo-Chinese pairing had a tough outing in the first two rounds where they were dragged to the third set but peaked at the right moment, beating the Japanese pair of Hozumi and Ninomiya in the semifinals.
Mirza-Zhang to compete in Chicago next
Mirza and Zhang will now play at the Chicago Fall Tennis Championships next where they are unseeded. They will play wild cards Coco Vandeweghe and Caroline Dolehide in the opening round and could face 8th seed Czech pairing of Bouzkova and Hradecka in the quarterfinals. If Sania manages to win this event with Zhang, she will enter the top 50 of the WTA rankings for the first time since her comeback on tour.
