“Seems like nobody could stop her” OLYMPIC CHAMPION makes BIG CLAIMS on Iga Swiatek after title triumph at the Indian Wells
Mikaela Shiffrin and Iga Swiatek
It was a historic week with, Skier Mikaela Shiffrin winning the World Cup overall title, ski racing’s most coveted prize, and Iga Swiatek clinching the 2022 Indian Wells title.
Swiatek capped off a dominant run at the BNP Paribas Open By defeating Maria Sakkari in the finals. She also achieved another milestone by matching Agnieska Radwanska as the highest-ranked Polish tennis player in history. Whereas it was redemption for Shiffrin, considered one of the best skiers, and holds the record of most World Cup slalom wins-47. She had a dismal 2022 Olympics where she failed to bag a title having entered as the gold medal favorite in all the disciplines in Beijing. During these turbulent times, Iga Swiatek sent a heartfelt message to Shiffrin and gave some encouraging words to the two-time Olympic champion. Shiffrin and Switaek share a special bond and admiration for each other despite not having met in person.
It is a wonder how both these players have had similar trajectories during their early careers. Akin to Swiatek, Shiffrin also burst into the scene as a teenager, bagging a podium at the World Cup aged 16 and standing on top of it at 17. While Swiatek created history at the 2020 French Open by becoming the youngest singles champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004, Shiffrin became the youngest skier to win the slalom in Olympic history at the 2014 Sochi Games.
‘Dream come true’: Iga Swiatek on being friends with Mikaela Shiffrin
Shiffrin and Swiatek connected on Instagram Live in 2021 after the WTA pro proclaimed her desire to be friends with Shiffrin. “It would be a dream come true,” she said not that long before and now it has turned to reality for Swiatek. Shiffrin who also had the unique experience of being a teenage champion had invaluable words of advice for Swiatek and also spoke highly of the Pole.
“But I’d also watch how she finds space and time even while she is playing a point. How when she is playing her best, even if she is hustling, she never seems ‘rushed.’ That anticipation of what is about to happen while being totally consumed with the current moment is a crucial skill. She seems like nobody could stop her. That’s really powerful.” she praised Swiatek.
Swiatek had a damp season last year, the Pole was steady but couldn’t match the heights of her triumph at the Roland Garros. Similarly, Shiffrin was going through a rough patch after a barren run at the Beijing Olympics. But it was a redemption arc for the duo as of late, with Swiatek winning two titles in a row over the past few weeks and Shiffrin redeeming herself with a World Cup overall title.
