World No. 20 Simona Halep finally filled the head coach position in her camp after having fired all of her coaching team after the 2022 Australian Open. Simona played without a coach using her own experience of her illustrious career and managed well, reaching two semi-finals including the one at the 2022 Indian Wells Open only to lose to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

After much consideration, Simona finally hired French coach Patrick Mouratoglou as her permanent head coach. Patrick, who has been working with Serena for almost a decade is likely to have ended his association with the 23-time Grand Slam champion as she continues to recover from her leg injury at 2021 Wimbledon and shows no signs of a comeback anytime soon.

Halep had initially trained at Patrick’s academy in France and that’s when the two are believed to have struck a chord that led to them joining hands and take Simona back to the top of her game as she is currently ranked 20th in the world. Simona however recently made a surprising statement about her new coach who is also training Stefanos Tsitsipas and Coco Gauff although he doesn’t travel with them in their respective entourages.

“Serena has been better than in the past when she worked with Patrick. This put him in the coaching elite. I didn’t really know him before this year. I found someone approachable, which is very important to me as an introvert. He makes himself understood in a few words but his requests are very specific. It suits my personality,” said Halep who also explained what made her bring Patrick on board.

Simona Halep yet to play on the Tour with Patrick Mouratoglou

Having announced the partnership at the temporary pause of hardcourt season, Halep did not play in the first week events of April that have started the Golden Swing in the build-up to the 2022 French Open. With Simona not playing the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, she gets a good two weeks to prepare for the Tour events under the new coach.
