Ash Barty made history when she won the final of the Australian Open 2022 by defeating Daniel Collins in straight sets. She became the first Australian to win the Australian Open title in 44 years. She was dominant throughout the tournament and didn’t drop a set en route to her title win.

With this win Barty is the only second active women’s player to win a Grand Slam title on all three surfaces, the other being former World No.1 and 23 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.

It’s been nearly two weeks since Barty’s historic win, but the tennis world is still in admiration for the World No.1. Spanish star Garbine Muguruza heaped praise on Barty and commended her for the win. The Spaniard added that Barty is very composed as World No.1 despite the pressure and expressed her admiration for the Australian’s tennis skills.

I’m very happy for her. I think that she’s showing a very composed No 1 and very solid. Tennis-wise we all see she’s very talented; but she’s taking it in a very mature way, very stable. Sometimes it’s difficult for all this pressure, being at home. Yeah, I’m happy. I think she deserved it,” Muguruza said in an interview with Eurosport.

Muguruza had a spectacular finish to her 2021 season, as she won the year-ending WTA Finals and finished the year as World No.3, her highest year-end ranking since 2017. The Spaniard couldn’t carry this momentum into her 2022 season. She had a string of early exits in all the tournaments she competed in this year. The former World No.1 has won only two matches so far this year.

Muguruza will be keen to shrug off her poor run of form as she prepares to defend her title at the WTA Dubai Tennis championships. The 28-year-old needs to be on top of her game as she eyes to replicate her success from last year. It is a packed field in Dubai as 8 of the top 10 players square off at the WTA 500 event which marks the start of the Middle East swing. Muguruza will begin her title defense against Katerina Siniakova in the opening round on Tuesday.
