“Snarky,” Chris Evert showers criticism over Nick Kyrgios’ unwillingness to answer an “appropriate” Question

According to 18-time Grand Slam singles winner Chris Evert, Nick Kyrgios was “little snarky” in refusing to entertain a complaint after practically hitting a ball boy at Indian Wells.

The World No. 132 played in an elevated, drama-filled match with the 21-time Grand Slam champion, but lost 7-6 (0) 5-7 6-4. The match eventually ended with Kyrgios slamming his racket into the floor after shaking hands with Rafael Nadal, following which he used swear words and dragged Hollywood comedian Ben Stiller into his drama. As a result, ball boy Tei Park was forced to crouch for shelter when the racket abruptly rebounded near the arena wall.

Kyrgios then chastised a reporter for bringing up the incident, claiming that the focus should be on his gallant three-set loss in the quarterfinals. “What would you like me to say about it? Obviously, was that my intention? No. Because I threw a racquet. Did I throw the racquet anywhere near him originally?” Kyrgios said.

“It landed a metre from my foot and skidded and nearly hit him. I’m human. Things happen like that. Obviously, it was a very misfortunate bounce. I think if I did that a million times over it wouldn’t have gone that way. And what do you want me to say? It was three metres away from the kid,” the Aussie went on to add.

Nick Kyrgios, who won the Australian Open 2022 men’s doubles alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis later reached out to the ball boy and staged his apology.

18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert, a.k.a ‘The Ice Maiden,’ told Eurosport that she hoped Kyrgios’ comeback continued, but that it was “appropriate” that he was probed about his racquet smash. “First of all, I thought Nick was playing very well. He had a good Indian Wells, I thought he looked in better shape, better condition than he has. He didn’t look out of breath. He looked like he had been working on his fitness.”

Evert remarked she thinks Kyrgios was a little “snarky” because he didn’t respond to a question that was very “appropriate”. “At the same time, I thought he was a little snarky. You know, that word snarky, when he was at the press conference because if you look at the video, he almost hit the ball boy. So that was a question that was appropriate. It was an appropriate question, and he was probably a little irritated and snarky and didn’t reply in a nice way.”

The American, however, concluded her statement by applauding Kyrgios’ performance and offering him the best wishes. “But all in all again, it’s a journey for him, he’s brilliant in his tennis and he’s made headway both in his tennis and his fitness and his emotions. “I hope that continues. Still, a little work to be done, but I hope that continues.”
