Hi guys, I am writing with disappointing news. Recently, I tested positive for Covid-19. Fortunately, I am vaccinated and thus my symptoms have been fairly mild. However I have continued to test positive and thus will not be able to compete at the US Open next week,” she wrote on Twitter.

Sofia also informed that she will need a couple of weeks to regain her fitness in order to return next fall in full flow. She wrote, “I plan to spend the next several weeks getting healthy and preparing to play well this fall. Thank you all for supporting me. I want to wish all the players the best of luck in New York.”

With so many highly-rated players already out of the tournament, innumerable tennis fans have been left heartbroken. However, the circumstances have been such that it would be fair to say that the players who have decided to stay away from the tournament have made the right choice.
