Spanish Prodigy Carlos Alcaraz all set to make his Davis Cup debut this week
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will make his Davis Cup debut on Friday in Marbella against Marius Copil of Romania. This will be his first time playing for Spain at the Davis Cup.
Alcaraz is now set to make a strong debut at the Davis Cup. He will come into this tournament with a lot of momentum, which he will try to capitalize on in order to assure Spain’s comfortable qualifying to the finals. Often dubbed “Baby Nadal” due to his performance trajectory, the youngster is expected to leave a mark in this tournament. He will play his first match against Romania’s Marius Copil.
Davis Cup’s official Twitter page tweeted about Alcaraz’s debut in the tournament on March 3rd.
At the moment, the Spaniard is on a roll. Alcaraz has continued to make huge improvements this season after winning the title in Umag and the NextGen ATP Finals last year. He has been playing some of the best tennis of his career right now. He advanced to the third round of the Australian Open when he challenged Matteo Berrettini to a fifth-set tie-break before losing. The Spaniard’s next appearance came at the 2022 Rio Open, where he claimed his maiden ATP 500 title. He took his revenge against Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. He beat Fabio Fognini in the semi-final round to book a date with Diego Schwartzman in the finals which he won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
The Rise of Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz won his first ATP Tour match against Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Rio Open two years ago when he was 16 years old. On Sunday, the 18-year-old Spaniard trounced himself and made more history in the same tournament. Along the way, Alcaraz is also building a lot more for his legacy. He became the youngest ATP 500 champion since the category’s establishment in 2009 with his triumph in Rio. He’s also the world’s youngest active player to crack the top 20.
Marius Copil, on the other hand, is a relatively unknown and a huge underdog in this Davis Cup tie. The Romanian is largely active on the Challenger tour this year, where he has a 4-3 win ratio. This is the first time these two will be pitted against one another. Alcaraz is in powerful form, and the Romanian will find it difficult to even win a set against him, let alone the match, considering his skills on clay and massive advances to his game.
