Stan Wawrinka has announced his return to tour and revealed he will play at the Roland Garros this year. The 3-time Grand Slam champion has been on the sidelines for nearly a year after he suffered a foot injury and had to undergo surgery as a result.

Wawrinka was recently seen at the practice courts to build up some match fitness and posted a video on his Twitter account last week showing his signature backhand during practice and announced he will be back soon.

The 34-year-old was one of the best players on tour during his prime. He won three Grand Slams and was ranked as high as No.3 in the world, which is pretty astonishing as he played during an era dominated by the Big three. After missing the hardcourt season this year, Wawrinka will make a comeback in France, the place where he won his second Grand Slam title in 2015.

Stan Wawrinka was quizzed about his comeback while he was attending a promotional event for a film in Paris. The 36-year-old then affirmed that he will play at the French Open this year. “Yes, ( I will play ) Roland Garros, yes,” he said.

While the Swiss might not be in his prime but stated that he will continue to play tennis because it’s his ‘passion’. He also stated that en enjoys pushing the boundaries and will be looking to have fun on his return to the tour. However, Wawrinka didn’t specify whether he will be playing another tournament in the lead-up to the Roland Garros.

People often ask me why I’m trying to come back from injury and continue, but it’s because tennis is a passion, I love the public. Above all, when I enter a tennis court, I always have in mind that it’s a game. The basis of tennis is that you tell a child Go play! There are many who forget it when they turn professional: they take tennis too much as a job. Me, what motivates me and still pushes me is telling myself I’m going to play, that I’m going to have fun,” he said.
