World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas returned to action in the singles event for the first time since the 2021 ATP Finals. Representing Greece, Stef took on Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the second group match. Having earlier withdrawn from his scheduled singles match against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, Stef took the court against Schwartzman.

Schwartzman however won the match 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 in a thrilling clash that almost lasted 3 hours. This was Stef’s first match since his elbow operation. While it was not a result he wanted, Stefanos would be however happy to test his shots and arm that he now believes is using muscles that he was earlier now aware of.

After two consecutive losses in the two matches Greece has played so far, the team is out of contention to qualify for the semi-finals as only the group leader will be the only team moving ahead. Greece is currently placed 3rd in the group and is now officially out of the competition with their match against Georgia being a dead rubber.

During the post-match press conference, Stefanos however had a cold reply for a particular question. Asked about his views on Alexander Zverev‘s comments earlier when he said the new Big-3 is Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Zverev himself, Stef did not speak much but just said, “Let tennis do the talking.”

During the 2021 season, Stefanos won two titles, the Lyon Open and the Monte Carlo Masters, his biggest career title so far. He also reached the finals of the French Open but lost to Djokovic despite being 2-sets up in the finals going into the 3rd set. These results saw him rise to World No. 3 but ended the year as World No. 4 after a string of poor results in the final few weeks.

Novak Djokovic had a brilliant season in 2021, reaching the finals of all 4 Grand Slams but losing the US Open finals to Medvedev. He picked up two tour titles as well, the Paris Masters and the Belgrade Open while reaching the finals of the Rome Masters also. He finished his 7th year as the World No. 1, an Open Era record.

Daniil Medvedev played 7 finals winning 4 and losing 3 including the Australian Open finals. His biggest title was the US Open, his first career Grand Slam title. He also won his first grass event, the inaugural Mallorca Championships and his 4th career Masters title as well. His consistency saw him take the spot as World No. 2 and finish it on the same rank.

Alexander Zverev was the most successful player with 6 titles to his name, the most on both the ATP and WTA Tour combined. He did not lose a single final, winning two Masters titles, two ATP-500 titles, the 2021 ATP Finals and also the singles Gold at the Tokyo Olympics, ending Germany’s wait of 29 years for Olympic gold in tennis.
