Sloane Stephens vs Kristie Ahn: Preview

Sloane Stephens
Sloane Stephens

Stephens comes into this contest at the back of a stunning performance in the first round against two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. The American was clinical is dislodging the lanky Czech in straight sets. Although Stephens has blown hot and cold on the WTA tour, the win over Kvitova will give her the required impetus to progress ahead in the tournament. Interestingly, the win over Kvitova was the 28-year-old’s first match on grass this season, after missing out on warm-up tournaments in Berlin and Nottingham.

On the other hand, Ahn also beat an accomplished grass court player in Heather Watson in the opening round. The American comes into the second round after having come through the qualifiers. Although she has played seven matches on the grass coming into Wimbledon, one wonders if the long match in the first round against Watson will leave her with much energy and endurance when she takes court against a Stephens. Interestingly, this is Ahn’s first Grand Slam of the year after failing to make an entry at the Australian and French Open.

The former French Open champion won a high percentage of her first serve points in the opening round against Kvitova. Moreover, she also broke the big-serving Czech three out of five times to nail the advantage. If Stephens can keep up the momentum on her serve and also break Ahn’s serve at regular intervals, this match should be a straightforward contest for the veteran American. On the other hand, for Ahn to progress ahead, she must hope that her body remains fresh and perhaps, Stephens also experiences a horrendous day.

Match Prediction: Sloane Stephens should win in two sets.
