Dayana Yastremska didn’t have much stability in her game until the Dubai Duty Tennis Championship 2022, as she got eliminated in the first round in all her previous tournaments this year, losing to Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove (6-2, 6-2) in the Melbourne Summer Set 1, Tereza Martincová ( 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 ) in the Adelaide International 2 and Madison Brengle (1-6, 6-0, 0-5 – walkover) in the Australian Open. The Ukrainian did well at the Dubai Tennis Championship, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Marketa Vondrousova.
Yastremska recounts tragic story amidst Ukranian invasion
Amidst all the political tensions and instability in Ukraine, many people have spoken out on the topic including some of the biggest names in the world of tennis. But seldom does someone prominent with first-hand experience speak out.
After losing in Dubai, Dayana Yastremska went back to Ukraine to spend time with her family. Unfortunately, Dayana was caught in the Russian invasion, and eventually, she and her sister had to leave the country without her parents. Dayana posted the following heartbreaking message on Instagram.
The Ukrainian took to Instagram to post a painful message to the public, where she stated that seeing the situation, her parents took the decision to send her and her sister away from the country without her. She further expressed her love towards her parents and sided with the people of her nation, wishing them luck.
“After spending two nights in the underground parking, my parents made a decision at any cost to send me and my little sister out of Ukraine! Mom, Dad, we love you very much, take care of yourself!!! I love you my country! Ukrainians take care of your lives.”– posted Yastremska.
The Ukrainian then posted an update on Twitter, revealing that she and her sister are safe but tired and are currently safely located in France. She then reiterated her love and support for the people of Ukraine and revealed that she missed her parents a lot.
