“I don’t give a stuff whether you’re No. 1 or not” Tasmanian Senator reacts to questions on Novak Djokovic’s participation in the Australian Open

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is stuck in the eye of a storm. The World no. 1 has constantly refused to reveal his vaccination status, claiming that he has a right to keep it private. This has put him in direct crosshairs of Victorian authorities who have made it clear that in order to participate in the Australian Open, a player has to be doubly vaccinated. They have stated that no exemptions will be made, not even for the Serb who has won 9 of his 20 grand slam titles in Melbourne. The latest person to comment on this matter was Senator Jacqui Lambie.

There had been some speculations in the media and among the fans that Novak Djokovic might be planning on exploiting a loophole to gain medical exemption for the Australian Open. And while his name has been included in the list of participants for the tournament and that of the ATP Cup, the authorities of the state of Victoria have made it clear that every person entering Melbourne Park, be it players, fans, or staffers, have to be doubly vaccinated.

Novak Djokovic is yet to confirm his appearance at the first grand slam of the year, or reveal his vaccination status.

Jacqui Lambie, a Tasmanian Senator made an appearance on The Today Show. When questioned about the Novak Djokovic’s tentative participation in the upcoming grand slam, and his intentions of using a loophole, Lambie retorted “I don’t know where the loophole comes from. You’re either double-vaxxed or not. If you’re not double-vaxxed, like many Australians, I don’t give a stuff whether you’re No. 1 or not.”

Earlier today, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had also stated that no special treatment will be meted out to the Serb. “He [Djokovic] will follow the same rules as anyone else would. There are no special rules for tennis players or anyone else.”
