World No. 1 for 112 consecutive weeks now, Ash Barty dropped a bombshell on the tennis fraternity when she announced her retirement from tennis having won the 2022 Australian Open a few weeks ago. The 25-year old announced her retirement via her Instagram handle in a short interview.
While Barty did not pinpoint one particular reason for her retirement, she emphasised that having achieved all of her goals when she started playing tennis which include winning the Wimbledon Championships and the Australian Open, the 25-year old does not have any more hunger to continue playing and has decided to step back from the sport.
With the tennis fraternity in shock over the big news, former Grand Slam champion and World No. 1 Tracy Austin also tweeted out to Barty for her fantastic career that has been nothing but inspirational as she retires being the top-ranked player and had a difference of more than 2000 ranking points to World No. 2 Iga Swiatek.
“Happy for you, @ashbarty to go out on your terms but the tennis world will miss a great champion. Love your elegant, athletic style of play and have always been impressed with the way you handle yourself on and off the court. Enjoy the next chapter,” tweeted Austin expressing her delight that Barty was able to retire on her own terms.
Ash Barty retires without a defeat this season
With the Australian leg of the Tour being Barty’s last appearance ever, Barty retires without a defeat in the 2022 season having won 11 consecutive matches. Starting her season at the 2022 Adelaide International, Barty dropped a set only in the first match before going on to win the title.
She then played at the 2022 Australian Open winning the Slam without dropping a set and claiming her third title which meant the 25-year old had won Grand Slams on all surfaces. The win in the finals was her 11th win of the season and Barty says goodbye to the sport with a 305-102 record that sees her retire with a winning record of nearly 75%.
