Frenchman Gael Monfils is one of the veteran on tour. He has been one of the most consistent player on tour and has reached at least a tour final every year for almost the last two decades. Monfils started the 2022 season on a very positive note by winning the Adelaide International 1 title. He dominated the tournament and won it without dropping a set.

He got the better of Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Tommy Paul in the initial rounds before beating Thanasi Kokkinakis in the semifinal. He then blasted past second seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets 6-4,6-4 to win the title. Interestingly, Monfils had a terrible 2021 season where he struggled to get past the initial rounds.

In his post match speech, Monfils spoke highly of his wife Elina Svitolina. He thanked the Ukrainian for her extensive support in Monfils’ bad times last season where he even thought of quitting. “I want to thank my wife, Elina. She is always there,” Monfils said.

“It was a really really tough last year for me. Almost- not want to quit- but I lost a bit of faith in tennis and everything and she was there, always caring. So thank you Elina, thank you for everything!” Monfils added.
