“That’s why Rafael Nadal is so spectacular” Top coach reveals what drives the Spaniard
Rafael Nadal
World No. 4 Rafael Nadal continues to impress the tennis fraternity smashing records even at the age of 35 coming back from an injury that had given rise to doubts in the player’s mind whether he should retire from the sport. The Spaniard is already on his best start to a season having won 15 matches on the trot picking up three titles during the time.
Nadal is often credited as the ‘King of Clay’ for his impressive record on the surface. However, this has also led him to be called a Claycourt bully, an accusation the Spaniard smashed this season by claiming 3 back-to-back titles all on hardcourts as he is now boasting 25 titles on hardcourts from the 92 he has won so far.
Nadal’s first title of the season came at the 2022 Melbourne Summer Set 1 followed by his title at the 2022 Australian Open that made him the man with the most number of Grand Slam titles, capping off a successful trip Down Under. After a small break of 3 weeks, Nadal returned to action at the ATP-500 Acapulco Open 2022 where he won the title without dropping a set defeating Cameron Norrie in the finals.
“That’s what’s amazed me, you look at the elation on his face after a tournament like this, which is a great tournament but it’s not Wimbledon, it’s not the US Open. Rafael Nadal’s won in 7,000 tournaments already but to go to Acapulco and see the joy and the sheer fun that he still has competing and playing tennis. To me, that’s what drives him and that’s why he’s so spectacular,” said Paul Annacone, former coach of Roger Federer, speaking with Tennis Channel.
Rafael Nadal chasing his 4th title in Indian Wells
In the first Masters event of the season, Nadal will be playing next at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters where he is chasing his 4th title of the season and also the tournament. Nadal won the title in Indian Wells in 2007, 2009 and 2013 having a 54-10 record at the tournament also called as the ‘5th Grand Slam of tennis’ for its importance.
