“The decisions made by ATP will not help what they are currently undergoing in Ukraine” Pablo Carreno Busta opines on ban on Russian players
Pablo Carreno Busta and Daniil Medvedev
The world is in midst of turmoil with the war raging in Ukraine. Russia has launched a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine which has already cost hundreds of lives with scores injured. The crisis has also forced the Ukrainians to flee their own country for safety. This inhuman act by Russia has been met with serious sanctions from other countries as well as many sporting bodies. Numerous tennis players have expresses their solidarity with Ukraine and condemned this vile act by Russia.
The Tennis governing bodies also have strongly condemned the Russian invasion and in retaliation have suspended the Russian and Belarusian Tennis Federation. It has also stripped both countries from hosting rights of tournaments. However, athletes from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to compete in individual tournaments, under a neutral flag.
“What is happening in Ukraine is not right. I hope it can be resolved as soon as possible“- Pablo Carreno Busta
Spanish tennis star Pablo Carreno Busta expressed his opinion on the verdict to allow Russian players to compete under a neutral flag. Carreno Busta said the decision made by the ATP and WTA will not ease the suffering of the Ukrainian people. He also acknowledged both Medvedev and Rublev, who have earlier spoken out against the invasion and made a plea for peace between the two countries. However, the Spaniard added that he doesn’t know if the decision that has been made is an adequate sanction or not. Carreno Busta then went on to express his solidarity with Ukraine and hoped for the situation to deescalate soon.
“The important thing is that all actors have shown themselves against the war, both Rublev and Medvedev and other actors who have declared a very clear position on what is happening in Ukraine. Then, the decisions made by the ITF, ATP, WTA, or other sports, whether they are more or less fair, will not help when compared to what they are currently undergoing in Ukraine. I don’t know if it’s right, if it’s adequate or if there is a solution for this, the point on which we all agree is that what is happening in Ukraine is not right. I hope it can be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.
